On 29 September, DPI ran an online assessment meeting entitled ‘The Military – Government Relationship in Turkey’. The meeting was designed to provide an open and frank discussion on the issue of “military tutelage” in Turkey which remains to be an obstacle to a possible peace process.
The event’s keynote speaker was senior journalist and political commentator Ali Bayramoglu who authored the report under the same name which can be found on the DPI website.
The assessment covered the recent deployment of the Turkish Armed Forces in foreign lands which shows a drastic change in the Turkish foreign policy and the military – government relationship. Because of this reason Ali Bayramoglu’s report could enlighten readers about the historical development of the military-government relationship in Turkey and shed light on the political alliances which balance this relationship.
The assessment was followed by a discussion session where participants were able to engage in a question-and-answer session with the author.
The online assessment meeting forms part of a larger series of activities planned in the context of the project: “Forging Pathways to Peace and Democracy in Turkey”, supported by the Norwegian, Swiss and Irish governments.
