Owen Bowcott, who was the Guardian’s Ireland correspondent, shared his experiences at the event organised by the Democratic Progress Institute (DPI) on the 23rd of October. The title of the event was ‘Communicating Peace and Enhancing Dialogue: Reconsidering the Role of Media in Conflict Resolution.’ Owen Bowcott highlighted seven crucial points on the conflict resolution process: the importance of parties respecting the secrecy of the initial talks; the choice of words and language while reporting on the conflict; the necessity of protecting journalists; the power of the social media; the influence of documenting personal stories of the victims; the responsibilities of heads of states and the importance of a fair division of power. Bowcott also talked about the incident regarding a high-level double agent in the Provisional IRA, Freddie Scappaticci.
