DPI held an online roundtable on 27 April entitled ‘Current Situation in Turkey: Government Perspective and Future Vision’. The roundtable was the first in our series of online meetings with political parties in Turkey, which include AK Party, CHP, DEVA Party, Future Party and HDP. The purpose of this first meeting was to discuss the current situation in Turkey through the perspective of the ruling party. The key speaker was Cevdet Yılmaz, Deputy Chair of AK Party, Responsible for Foreign Affairs. This meeting brought together through an online platform a diverse group of participants from Turkey, including academics, WPC members, journalists and lawyers. We were also delighted to be joined, virtually, by representatives of the EU, French Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs, DPI’s Board Members and Council of Expert members. The meeting provided an insightful and timely discussion on the current developments in Turkey and on the potential challenges and opportunities presented by COVID-19 in the political, social and economic spheres. The RT forms part of a larger series of activities planned in the context of the project: “Supporting inclusive dialogue at a challenging time in Turkey”, supported by the EU and the Norwegian government.
