On July 31, DPI held an online event titled “Implication of the Constitutional Debates on the Political Sphere in Turkey” with political commentator and writer Ali Bayramoğlu and constitutional law expert Prof Dr Sevtap Yokuş joining as speakers. While Bayramoğlu analysed the current situation following the recent local elections and emphasised the possibility of a reconstruction of society-politics relations in Turkey, Yokuş focused on the impact of constitutional amendments and debates on politics in Turkey.
In his speech, Bayramoğlu emphasised that the balances in politics have changed and that there has been a transition from a period in which political supply determined demand to a period in which social demands have become clearer and public opinion has started to shape politics. Prof. Dr. Sevtap Yokuş stated that, regardless of all the reservations, the discussions on a new constitution have the potential to create a space where Turkey’s important problems can be discussed.
